Jagatsinghpur, Feb 14 (LocalWire) At least 10 people, including two women and a minor girl, were seriously injured when Congress and Biju Janata Dal (BJD) workers allegedly clashed at Kundupur village under Balikuda police limit over immersion of Goddess Sarswati idol.
Sources said Kundupur villagers, led by Congress supporter Rajkiosore Sahoo, with permission from Jagatsinghpur sub divisional magistrate, had erected a Saraswati Puja pandal and organized cultural programmes by using sound system as per the Odisha Fire Works and Loud Speaker Regulation Act 1963 since the last five days.
Meanwhile, some BJD supporters, under the banner of New Star Club, without obtaining permission from the administration, performed the puja and hosted programmes using DJ sound illegally.
On Wednesday, the villagers decided to conduct immersion ceremony of the Sarswati idol, but New Star Club members hosted a melody show in the middle of the road hindering the immersion procession.
Soon, this reportedly led to a clash between the two groups.
Sources claimed BJD supporters attacked the opposition group with lathi and iron rods in which 10 members of both groups were injured.
The 8 injured persons from the villagers’ group were Sarat Behera, Sasmita Behera, Rabindra Behera, Umarani Behera , Rajkishore Sahoo, Ganeswer Behera, Bibhuti Bhusan Sahoo and Sanatan Sahoo and the two people wounded from the club were Ajit Tarai and Sunil Sahoo..
Out of ten, three people, who were critically injured, were shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack.
Balikuda police station in-charge Sarbeswer Behera said: “The clash occurred between two groups of people of this village following past political rivalry.”
“Police forces have been deployed in this village to avert tension. Ten persons from the both the groups have been injured while police is investigating this case,” said Behera.
