Bhubaneswar, Dec 29 (LocalWire) At least 17 women labourers from Odisha, who were allegedly held captive for three months in a brick klin, were rescued, said police on Saturday.
The Laxmipur police said they accompanied Labour department officials to Telangana and rescued the women after their family members lodged complaints on the issue.
The police said the women are from Chuchukana and Piskadang villages under Pipalpadar panchayat in Koraput district.
“Two contractors of Rayagada district promised the women labourers jobs within 50 kms of their villages. But, instead, the men took them to a Telangana brick klin,” said a police official.
The women’s families had reportedly urged the brick klin owner to release them, but he said the women would be allowed to leave only after the two contractors depose before him.
Since the contractors remained untraceable, their families sought help of local police and administration to help rescue the women.
“We rescued 17 women from Telangana on Friday,” said the officer.
