Bhubaneswar, Nov 19 (LocalWire): More than 25,000 cases are pending pronouncement of judgment in Orissa High Court for more than a decade while filing of 3,796 litigations date back to two decades or more.
Currently the Orissa High Court is bearing the burden of 1,50,938 pending cases with 21,659 cases pending for 10 to 20 years and 3,796 cases are pending for more than two decades or more.
What aggravates the speedy trial process further is that more than 50% posts of judges are lying vacant in the High Court.
Currently there are 13 judges, including the chief justice, against the sanctioned 27 judges. With the available judges’ strength, it may take years to dispose pending cases, said senior lawyers of Orissa High Court.
In the lower courts, from the district judge court to judicial magistrate court, as many as 14,14,745 cases are pending. Over ten percent of these cases are pending for more than ten years.
Like the higher judiciary, the vacancies of judges’ post equally affect the trial process in the lower judiciary. 25 posts of district and sessions judges, 34 posts of senior civil judges besides 89 posts of civil judges are lying vacant in the state.
