Kendrapara, March 6(LocalWire): Three members of a family were sentenced to life imprisonment in a dowry death case today after six years of the crime.
Additional District and Sessions Judge, Kendrapara, Pragnya Panigrahi, found the victim’s husband Susant Mallick(30), father-in-law Agasti Mallick(58) and mother-in-law Mukta Mallick(55) of Kataramalla village under Patamundai Police Station, guilty of burning Laxmi Mallick (22) for dowry on 16th March 2013.
She passed the order under Sections 302 and 34 of IPC, after examining 19 witnesses and relying on the dying declaration of the victim.
The convicts were also slapped a fine of Rs 1000 each, failing which would result in their sentence being increased to one more month.
Akshya Mallick the father of the victim, in his FIR said his daughter was constantly tortured for Rs 50,000 and a colour TV set and eight months into the marriage, the convicts set her on fire.
In her dying declaration, Laxmi told the police and the magistrate that her husband and in-laws had set her on fire after pouring kerosene on her.
She succumbed to her injuries after 12 days at the SCB Medical College and Hospital.
