Bhubaneswar, Nov 18 (LocalWire): Odisha is home to 12,44,402 physically-challenged people with 37% of them being covered under the social security monthly pension benefits.
As per the government’s submission in the Assembly, 4,69,074 persons with disabilities (PwDs) are availing the benefit of Indira Gandhi National Disability Pension Scheme (IGNDPS) and Madhu Babu monthly pension scheme.
The state government is adhering to the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPwD) Act, 2016 and those medically found to be 40 percent physically deformed are entitled for pension and job reservation benefits, the minister for Social Security and Empowerment of Persons with Disability, Ashok Panda told the Odisha Assembly.
The government has taken into account the 2011 census report which puts the disabled population in Odisha at 12,44,402 to bring them under various social security schemes.
The number of disabled people in the meanwhile has gone up although the data in this regard is under compilation.
While 21.20% are visually impaired, 24.62% are hearing and speech impaired.
20.89% are orthopedically impaired while 5.82% are suffering from mental illness.
The rest of them have multiple physical disabilities, the minister said.
