Berhampur, March 28 (LocalWire): Police today arrested four members of a gang that stole two-wheelers. Police beefed up security before the elections and checked papers randomly. The gang was busted from different places under Mohana police station in Gajapati district.
Police said they seized 13 two-wheelers – 12 motorbikes and a scooter – from the miscreants. While checking papers, Babula Nayak, who has first arrested, could not produce the papers of the two-wheeler he was riding. On probing, he confessed of the crime and also disclosed other culprits’ names. While three vehicles were recovered from him, others were recovered from the other three people.
‘The leader of the gang is in Bhubaneswar and we are trying to arrest him and recover more stolen motorbikes,’ said SP Gajapati, Sarah Sharma.
Police said some of these vehicles were stolen from Bhubaneswar, Berhampur and Angul areas. ‘We are trying to establish the owners of the vehicles,’ the SP said. Since, the culprits had changed the registration number and some parts of the vehicles, it was difficult for the police to find out the owner of the vehicles, she said.
Sharma suspected ganja peddlers used these stolen motorbikes to smuggle the contrabands. ‘We are investigating if the accused sold the two-wheelers to ganja peddlers at cheaper rate after changing the registration number and other parts of the vehicle,’ she said.
