Jajpur, Dec 26 (LocalWire) As many as five workers were injured in an explosion at privately-run Maithan steel plant at Kalinganagar under Jakhapura police station of Jajpur district on Wednesday, said police.
According to police, the workers were injured when a portion of the blast furnace of the steel unit exploded.
All the five injured workers – Gouranga Channra Singh, Satyaranjan Sahoo, Umanath Yadav, Manas Mallick and Sunil Majhi – were first admitted to the government hospital at Kalinganagar.
Later they were shifted to a private hospital in Cuttack as their condition was serious, said Jakhapura police inspector-in-charge Ramakanta Muduli.
Meanwhile, the district administration has ordered officials of the factory to submit a report about the mishap.
Tension mounted near the steel plant as many workers blamed the management for the mishap.
Trade union member Jagajiban Das alleged: “Safety norms are flouted with impunity by the private steelmaker. There is gross absence of periodic maintenance work. Authorities concerned work hand-in-glove with the company management.”
Senior police officers rushed to the spot and cordoned off the area.
