Jagatsinghpur, April 29 (LocalWire): Nearly 550 voters of Naliapal in Garei panchyat under Paradip Assembly constituency boycotted today’s election for illegally shifting their booth to nearby village on Monday.
Sources said the villagers protested the illegal shifting of the booths from their village to another village.
They had submitted a memorandum to the Chef Electoral Officer, Collector and other officials to conduct polling in their village but neither the administration nor the polling officials paid any heed to them.
Villagers said in 2009 and 2014 general elections, they had cast their vote in booth no 82 at Naliapali Primary School in their village.
This year the scheduled polling booth was two kms away from their village at Bibachpur Primary School. Despite their frequent complaints, no one heard their grievances and they boycotted their votes today.
‘There are old people, people with disabilities and pregnant women in our village. It is very difficult for them to go to booth no 76 in Bibachpur Primary School.
Due to the heat wave, it is also impossible for the other voters to reach this booth so we decided to boycott the elections today,’ a villager said.
The sarpanch of Garei panchayat, Sangram Mantri, confessed ‘the harried villagers were assured by the administration but they did not re-consider so they boycotted the polls’.
Block officials led by IIC of Kujang police station Dillip Kumar Sahu rushed to the spot and pacified the villagers and requested them not to boycott voting but the villagers ignored the officials pleas.
