Bhubaneswar, Aug 12 (LocalWire): The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) claims that seven of their outsourced sanitation workers (safai karamcharis) have contracted the global pandemic of Coronavirus.
According to BMC Commissioner Prem Choudhury seven such sanitation workers are personnel of the private sanitation agencies hired by the civic body.
As per government data out of the 57 Wards, BMC manages cleaning in 10 wards with their own staff while works of remaining areas have been outsourced to private firms like-Ramky, PMR and Jagruti.
According to the BMC officials, six sanitation workers of Ramky and one from Jagruti have been tested positive for the disease.
The civic body is now helping in testing of their sanitation workers too.
Till now 2,152 such workers have been tested till now. Others are also likely to be tested.
The BMC is said to have sanitation workers who are entrusted with the task of garbage collection and other cleanliness related works in the smart city.
