In the run-up in Kumrpurnima, the festival of youths celebrated five days after the Dussehra, gambling is rampant in Ganjam district.
It reaches the climax when almost all the locals, irrespective of their ages gamble on the night of Kumarpurnima, considering it as a tradition in the district.
The tradition also seems to have spread in the neighboring districts like Kandhamal and Gajapati and the police made several arrests from there.
Police, however, said they continued to raid the banned gambling dens, to prevent any law and order problems.
“We will continue to crack down on the gambling dens. Gambling is prohibited by law and we will not allow it in the name of tradition,” Ganjam superintendent of police Brijesh Rai said.
He has instructed all police officers in the district to crack down on gambling in their respective areas.
