Balasore, November 12 (LocalWire): It may be a nondescript and little known village in Mayurbhanj, close to Balasore border, but Paikasahi is the place that has produced several volleyball players of state and national level in India.
Volleyball is a household game for the young boys or girls in this village of over 1,200 habitants that comes under Totapada gram panchayat of Rasgobindapur block in Mayurbanj, and one can see the players practicing regularly in the morning and evening here.
The players from the village are all members of the Ranjit Club, which also hosts the four-day annual national-level volleyball tournaments during Makara Sankranti that is well attended by teams of various government organisations, police and PSU.
The village has also produced several national-level referees and coaches.
According to the club vice-president and retired superintendent of police Santosh Nayak, as many as 22 players from the village club have graduated to become coaches and referees at different levels.
“Several players have got jobs under the sports quota. They are in the police, paramilitary forces, railways and in a number of PSUs. Niranjan Nayak is one of the prominent referees of India has even conducted international events,” Nayak said.
“For nearly six decades the villagers have been practicing volleyball as a religion. The Ranjit club was established in 1959 and now the third generation is playing, practicing and hosting events here,” he stated.
