Jagatsinhgpur March 26 (LocalWire): Activists on Tuesday demanded a 15-day state-wide liquor ban to prevent alcohol-related violence, and accidents, in the run up to polls.
Activists of Senior Citizen Forum and Odisha Nisha Nibarana Abhijan said that an EC liquor ban, 24 hours before polls, will have little impact as a huge quantity of liquor is already being stored for distribution.
Hence, the only way to stop the booze flow is to enforce a ban at least fortnight ahead of elections, said the activists, who staged a demonstration outside the Kujang block office to press for their demand.
After Bihar has banned liquor sale, irrespective of elections, Tamil Nadu is also keen on introducing a similar law. The Odisha Government should follow suit, the activists said.
Although liquor is banned in hotels, restaurants or other eating joints during election, it’s still served secretly in the local market because of a nexus between excise officials and liquor traders, they alleged.
The activists have also submitted a memorandum to the chief electoral officer through the BDO, Kujang.
