Paradip, December 13 (LocalWire): The district administration has sought the cooperation of villagers to conduct the proposed public hearing meeting peacefully for obtaining environmental clearance for JSW Utkal Steel Limited of Jindal Group.
The administration sought the support from the villagers at two separate meetings held at Gadakujang and Nuagaon panchayat on Friday.
The Odisha State Pollution Control Board (OSPCB) has fixed 20 December 2019 for conducting its environmental public hearing at Gadakujang Jagannath temple for setting up the 52 MTPA steel manufacturing plant on the land allotted to Posco earlier in Paradip.
The public hearing for obtaining environmental clearance from the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change is part of the land acquisition guideline of the government.
According to sources, out of 1,047 families in Gadakujang panchayat, only 105 villagers including few women participated in today’s meeting.
Sources also revealed that the meeting at Nuagaon, which has a population of 5,000, was attended by only 50 people because most of the villagers have vowed to oppose the project.
The villagers are opposing the project to protest against issues including employment, displacement, rehabilitation, environmental pollution, nonpayment of sustenance allowance to betel vine labourers, nonpayment of compensation of betel vine owners during the land acquisition for the Posco steel project.
During the meeting, youth leader Tamil Pradhan highlighted different issues faced by the villagers and sought the intervention of administration to resolve them through tripartite discussion between administration, JSW and the local people.
Superintendent of police R Prakash, assistant superintendent of police Paradip Bishnu Charan Mishra, BDO Erasama Kailash Behera and other officials were also present at the meetings.
