Bhubaneswar, September 24 (LocalWire): Close on the heels of the death of four elephants, a female Nilgiri langur died at the Nandankanan Zoological Park (NZP) here on Monday.
“The one-year-old primate was suffering from chronic necrotic liver disease since past one week. Despite the best effort by zoo vets, it could not be saved,” NZP deputy director Jayant Kumar Das said.
Meanwhile, amid the despair of continuing death of animals, the zoo authorities had some reason to cheers with the birth of a hog deer, two blackbucks, two mouse deer, and one swamp deer during the past 24 hours.
Das also informed that the health condition of four elephants in the zoo was perfect.
“No symptom of herpes virus infection has been detected. They are segregated as the virus-borne disease spreads with elephants coming in physical contact with each other.
The zoo veterinarians are monitoring the health condition of elephants round the clock,” Das said.
Nandankanan zoo has lost four elephants due to deadly herpes viral infection, bringing down the number of pachyderms in the Zoological Park here to four.
