Bhubaneswar, November 23 (LocalWire): Come 20 January 2020 and a long-standing demand of lakhs of Odia people living in Surat will be fulfilled.
With the centre approving the direct flight route between Surat and Bhubaneswar, the national carrier, Air India (AI) is slated to commence its operation on the route early next year.
“The Air India proposes to operate Bangalore-Surat-Bhubaneswar and return route twice a week effective from 20 January 2020,” AI authorities stated in a letter sent to the Airport Authority of India director at the Biju Patnaik International Airport.
“Congratulations to all our Odia friends in Bhubaneswar and Surat.
Finally, we have Bhubaneswar-Surat flight w.e.f. 20th January, 2020,” BJP MP from Bhubaneswar Aparajita Sarangi tweeted on Friday.
“I’m delighted that my request to civil aviation ministry to commence a direct Air India flight between Bhubaneswar and Surat is granted,” she said.
Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik had earlier urged the centre to introduce direct flights between the two cities to make travel easier for a large number of Odias working in Surat.
The skilled human resources from Odisha are much sought after in the textile city of Surat in Gujarat.
The city is home to more than 20 lakh Odias employed in textile, diamond and chemical industry sectors.
Sizeable numbers of Odia workers hail from Ganjam district, home turf of chief minister Patnaik.
