Berhampur, June 26 (LocalWire): District AIDS prevention control unit in collaboration with Saathii, a private agency, today screened Aska sub-jail inmates, in Ganjam district. Ganjam has one of the highest numbers of HIV positive people in the country.
After completing the screening among the inmates of Circle Jail here, focus shifted to the prisoners of the sub-jails in Ganjam.
‘We have screened 86 inmates at Aska sub-jail. None of them, however, tested HIV positive,’ said Hemanta Kumar Dash, district programme manager, district AIDS prevention control unit. ‘We screened 117 inmates at Bhanjanagara sub-jail and no one tested positive there too,’ he added.
They, however, found six inmates suffering from suspected tuberculosis. Sputum samples were collected from these inmates and sent for diagnosis.
Inmates were also counseled and 13 inmates were screened for syphilis in Bhanjanagar, Dash said.
Inmates of all other sub-jails in the district located at Chhatrapur, Digapahandi, Kodala and Sorada would be tested for HIV in July.
He said they had tested 1091 inmates of Circle jail from May 2018 to June 2019 and four of them tested HIV positive while four tested positive to TB, he added.
‘Checking the HIV profile of inmates is an ongoing process and the pharmacists in the jail have been trained and provided with kits to carry out the test periodically to know the status of HIV among the jail inmates,’ Dash said.
