Bhubaneswar, Mar 19 (Local Wire): The four candidates nominated by the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) for the Rajya Sabha elections have now sailed through the waves and made it to the Upper House.
Buoyed by the fact that the BJP and Congress failed to name any candidate for the elections, the names of the four candidates proposed by BJP were finalized.
Assembly Secretary cum Returning Officer Dashrath Satpathy announced the move of elevation of the four candidates of BJD into Upper House and their election.
The four candidates included Subhas Singh, Munna Khan, Sujit Kumar and Mamata Mahanta.
Earlier there were speculations of a competition or negotiation between some parties for the 4th candidature as the BJD with their majority in the Assembly was able to secure 3 Upper House seats on their own.
But for the fourth candidate some parties needed to negotiate for support for the name of candidate of their choice.
The elections to Rajya Sabha are done based on a single transferable vote on the formula of first preference votes.
The Congress had already decided not to field anybody as it was short of 10 MLAs which is a pre-requisite to propose the name of a candidate for Rajya Sabha.
CPM which has a lone MLA also had decided to not to forge alliance for the elections.
The saffron party on the other hand refrain from contesting the election.
All the four have now been elected unopposed to the House of Seniors.
