Berhampur, Jan 4 (LocalWire) Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) president Niranjan Patnaik on Friday reiterated his earlier commitment that if his party is voted to power in state assembly elections, they will write off farm loan within the five hours of forming the government.
“Besides, solar pump set and financial assistance for five years will also be provided to the farmers, if Congress forms the government in the state,” Patnaik said at a party workers’ conference held at Jaura under Ganjam district’s Sanakhemundi assembly constituency.
“We are also planning to provide more assistance to the farmers because they constitute 70% of the total population of Odisha and the state can only developed, if the economic condition of the farmers develops,” he said.
He said farm loan waive is nothing new for the Congress.
“The UPA government headed by Manmohan Singh had written off Rs 77,000 crore farm loan,” he said.
“In the recent state assembly elections, where the Congress came to power in Chhatisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, there also farm loans have been waived off,” said Patnaik.
He further said: “There will be no problem for implementation of these schemes in the state, as Congress president Rahul Gandhi himself wants economical development of farmers.”
Patnaik lashed out at the Naveen Patnaik government, saying, the BJD government has done nothing for the farmers.
“The government did not create any facility for irrigation by setting up the irrigation projects during their tenure, while they promised to provide 35% irrigation facilities in each block,” he said.
Attacking the BJD for its proposed demonstration in front of the parliament on January 8 demanding to enhance the Minimum Support Price (MSP) of the paddy to Rs 2930 per quintal, Patnaik said while neighboring states have provided incentives to the farmers on and above the MSP of paddy, Odisha farmers are forced to distress sale their product.
Pertinently, the newly formed Congress government in Chhatisgarh announced MSP of Rs 2500 per quintal of paddy.
