Berhampur, December 25 (LocalWire): The Christian community in Kandhamal district celebrated Christmas with fun and gaiety on Wednesday.
Braving the severe cold, hundreds of Christians had thronged the churches since mid-night despite the temperature in Phulbani dropping to 9.3 degrees Celsius.
The churches across the district were decorated with the dazzling lights and stars, and while the corals caressed the air, the Christian performed the midnight prayers at the churches, most of which were guarded by the armed forces.
“No untoward incident has been reported anywhere, so far,” Kandhamal superintendent of police Prateek Singh said.
The tribal-dominated district has a sizeable pollution of Christians and the administration has made tight security arrangements for the occasion.
According to sources, 25 platoons of police forces and 72 officers have been deployed in sensitive areas, while the police intensified patrolling in the district throughout the night.
The police also staged a flag march in sensitive areas on the eve of Christmas, while three platoons of forces have been deployed at Barkhama.
It may be recalled that Kandhamal Kui Samaj Samanwaya Samiti, a tribal outfit in the district, had earlier called to celebrate martyr’s day to mark the death anniversary of its leader Khageswara Mallick at Barkhama, near Baliguda in a communal riot on 25 December 2007.
Similarly, in Gajapati district, three platoons of forces have been deployed in sensitive areas like Mohana, Adava, R Udayagiri and Gumma areas.
According to Gajapati superintendent of police Sarah Sharma, the night patrolling was intensified in these areas and there are no reports of any untoward incident in the district.
