Bhubaneswar,Feb 15 (LocalWire) Ragging Free Campus Abhiyan (RFCA) , an anti ragging group has demanding the intervention of the state government as ragging cases have surfaced recently in various academic institutions.
The group said under the 5Ts model, students are our stakeholders and their human rights must be protected with a zero-tolerance approach towards ragging.
The RFCA demanded that the State government should enact the prohibition of ragging act like other states.
“We demand MPs of the state from all the Political Parties to support the Private Members’ Bill introduced in Lok Sabha named ‘The Prohibition and Eradication of Ragging Bill, 2019’ Tejeswar Parida, a group leader said.
In a statement it said further the guidelines issued by institutions like UGC, AICTE, MCI, etc.
must be strictly followed by all the institutions and monitored properly by the government.
The RFCA said a National Anti-Ragging Helpline Number is in place where the victims of ragging from institutes all across the country can report any case.
The number is 1800-180-5522 which remains open 24×7.
The counselling of students by professional counsellors in every educational institution shall be made mandatory with the recruitment of permanent professional counsellors and that hostel wardens must reside inside the campus.
A 100% CCTV Surveillance should be ensured in all the campuses.
Not only the students, but also the faculty members and parents should be sensitised towards the ills of ragging.
It further said that all campuses must be alcohol and tobacco free.
The RFCA also sought the intervention of the Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) a few months back.
The OHRC suggested different governmental departments should take necessary steps towards the same.
As most of the ragging cases remain unreported, various measures ensuring the sensitisation on ragging should be organised frequently.
It also appealed the State Government to form a ‘Task Force on Prevention of Ragging in Academic Institutions.’”
