Bhubaneswar, August 22 (LocalWire): The Narendra Modi-led government at the centre has turned the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into an instrument to settle political scores with the opposition, the state unit of Congress party said here today, reacting to the arrest of the former Finance Minister P Chidambaram by the investigating agency in the INX Media case.
“Chidambaram’s arrest is nothing but an act of political vendetta. BJP has made a mockery of CBI and enforcement directorate. The former finance minister is implicated in the case and was put behind the bar only because he assailed the scrapping of article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir,” senior Congress leader Narasingha Mishra said.
“It’s an unfortunate incident that does not augur well for a healthy democracy. There no prima facie case against the former home and finance minister but the CBI still arrested him. It sends clear signals of politicisation of investigating agencies in the country,” sitting Congress MLA Tara Prasad Bahinipati alleged.
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) also spoke on the same line.
“Chidambaram’s arrest is an orchestrated attempt by the Modi government to silence critics. CBI has lost its credibility and is dancing to the tune of Centre,” veteran CPM leader Janardan Pati alleged.
The ruling BJD, whose proximity with BJP after 2019 twin polls has become a point of debate, however, preferred to maintain a silence on arrest of the former finance minister.
“The party is yet to look into the merit of the INX media case. So it’s too early to jump into conclusion that the arrest was arbitrary,” BJD spokesperson and MLA Sashi Bhusan Behera stated.
The state unit of BJP, however, justified Chidambaram’s arrest. “Congress has made a laughing stock of itself by questioning the integrity of CBI. The premier investigating agency is unbiased. On the basis on corroborative evidence, it has arrested Chidambaram in INX media case,” state BJP media cell head Golek Mohapatra said.
