Kendrapara, Dec 3 (LocalWire): Four woman, including mother-in-law, were arrested on Monday for allegedly burning alive a 27-year-old woman for dowry at Balisuan village under Marsaghai police station of Kendrapada district.
All the four accused, including mother-in-law Saraswati Swain (60), and sisters-in-law Sukanti Swain (29), Basanti Swain (25) and Sagarika Swain (23), allegedly poured kerosene oil over Nirmal Swain’s wife Bharati Swain and set her ablaze on Sunday night.
According to the police, the couple was married three years back and they have a six-month-old daughter.
Bharati was allegedly tortured by her mother-in-law and sisters-in-law for dowry.
She succumbed to her burn injuries while undergoing treatment at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack on Monday.
“After investigation, we arrested all the four accused persons and booked them under sections 302 (murder) and 498-A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 4 of Dowry Prohibition. Act, 1961,” said Marsaghai police inspector-in-charge Kalinidi Behera.
The victim’s husband works as a plumber in Bangalore.
