Bhubaneswar, December 14 (LocalWire):The electronic toll collection system of FASTag was enforced today on the national highway toll plazas in the State.
The objective of the system is to ensure flawless traffic and prevent congestion at toll plazas, said National Highway Authorities of India officials.
However NHAI has extended the deadline for mandatory enforcement of FASTag till January 15 to enable vehicle users more time to get their vehicles with FASTag enabled.
In the four-lane toll plazas, the FASTag enabled vehicles are currently having hassle-free movement in three of the lanes.
One lane is now reserved for vehicles not enabled by tag on their windscreens, the officials said.
The system has eased the congestion on the plazas to a great extent after it was introduced, he added.
It’s a prepaid tag that enables automatic deduction of toll charges.
The radio-frequency identification (RFID)-based FASTag is affixed on the windscreen of the vehicle.
It allows for direct payment of fee from the prepaid or savings account linked to it and enables vehicles to drive through without stopping for transactions, NHAI said in a press release.
