April 21, 2019 By Shibani Behera 3 Comments

Thousands of Christians gathered at churches across the state, prayed and sang hymns to mark the occasion.

After 40-day period of Lent, Easter festivities begin with Palm Sunday a week before Easter Sunday.

Christians are busy with rituals and festivities associated with the Holy Week, also known as Passion Week, ending with Easter morning mass today.

In Berhampur, thousands of Catholics assembled at Believers Eastern Church on Easter Vigil, celebrated during anytime between sunset on Holy Saturday and sunrise on Easter morning.

On account of the heat, some churches began their Easter mass early in the morning and by sunrise people returned to their homes. Mostly, Easter service ends with the priest offering a piece of cake or at some churches, a teaspoon of wine.

‘After Good Friday we cannot wait for Easter to arrive.

It brings with it hope, joy and gives mankind another chance to live and we are celebrating it with much pomp by organizing get togethers and lunch,’ said Suman , a resident of Berhampur.

These days Easter is celebrated even by people from other faiths what with Easter bunnies and Easter eggs catching everyone’s fancy.

‘That’s the beauty of Easter, today I saw not only Christians but also people of other religions in church celebrating and enjoying Easter,’ Adil, a resident of Bolangir said.

Coconut shells to replace plastics in nurseries

April 13, 2019 By Shibani Behera Leave a Comment

Bhubaneswar, April 13 (LocalWire): Plastic bags have become an indispensable part of our lives in a very short span. What began as a boon for mankind has turned into a bane for the environment.

Plastics cause real, tangible harm to the environment. To curb the use of plastic, the district collector of Chhota Udaipur, Gujarat, came up with the idea of encouraging the forest department and other nurseries to use coconuts to nurse their seedlings.

In coastal areas of Odisha like Puri we find coconut shells in abundance but they are not put to any use and get decomposed by simply lying around.

‘Coconut shells are environment-friendly, can be re-used and will also reduce the cost of buying plastics that many a times hamper the growth of plants. I think if this initiative is taken up, it will help people like me a lot,’ said Raghu, a local nursery owner here.

‘While traveling to Puri I see a lot of coconut shells being wasted. Finally, it will be beautiful to see them being used in such a productive way,’ says Devi, a resident of Bhubaneswar.

We can urge the government and the forest department to make people aware towards an environment free of plastic, she added.

Helmet to police two-wheeler rides: Student invents smart device

April 8, 2019 By Shibani Behera 1 Comment

Rayagada, April 8 (LocalWire): What would you do if your scooter doesn’t start just after getting it serviced? Or you just walk out of the pub and your scooter refuses to switch on the ignition? Well! Not to worry!

Just wear your helmet or call a cab because your helmet will refuse to allow you to drive without it and while you have had a few pegs more than the permissible limits.

Gyanranjan Patnaik, a final year student of the Gandhi Institute of Science and Technology from Rayagada invented the ‘smart helmet’ to ensure safe rides on a two-wheeler.

The idea struck him a a few months back when he met with an accident. So, he along with his friends Robin Benia, Uttam Kumar Karik, S Nivas Manikanta he started this project.

‘Since childhood, I used to fancy electronics and wanted to do something for the betterment of the people,’ says Gyan, as he is popularly known.

Patnaik says a the helmet is designed such, that a two-wheeler will not operate unless the driver wears the helmet and it will stop functioning once the helmet is removed as the helmet includes a transmitter (TX) and the bike has a receiver (RX).

Moreover, the helmet is so smart that its sensor can detect alcohol levels of the driver and kill the engine preventing drunk driving, said Gyanaranjan.

The Head of Department, Kaliprasad Acharya, Principal Badal Acharya, faculty and batchmates of GIST College have helped our team by supporting us during this project, he added.

Expressing happiness over the product, Gobind Prasad Rath, managing director of the college, said, ‘I hope accidents will be minimised by this invention. I will ensure this smart helmet gets recognition nationally and internationally.’

‘I always wanted to be an inventor from my childhood. Now, that I have invented something useful, I want to fulfil my dream of seeing the product being used, so that it can save lives in times of need,’ said Patnaik.

Holi harmony lost in harmful colours

March 22, 2019 By Shibani Behera 2 Comments

Bhubaneswar, March 22 (LocalWire): The festival of Holi ushers in spring and it is as eagerly awaited as the season.

The festival of Holi, with its bright, redolent coloured powder, water filled balloons, sprinklers spraying jets of coloured water, happy faces and the shouts of ‘Holi hai!’ reverberating in the air is something everyone looks forward to.

But the commercialisation of the festival has brought in demands for brighter and long-lasting colours which have in turn helped the market of adulterated colours.

These synthetic colours are so harmful and toxic to the human body that often after a day of the festival, doctors and hospitals are flooded with complaints of itching, burning and scaling of the skin, loss of hair, skin discolouration, asthma-like condition and also ulcers that can damage the eyes, skin and the lungs.

It has been found that mercury sulphate is used to for red, copper sulphate for green, aluminium bromide for silver and lead oxide for black that causes serious health hazards like skin discoloration, burning sensation, asthma, scaling, loss of hair, ulcers that can damage skin, eyes and lungs.

LocalWire spoke to some people who sustained temporary and permanent health issues after coming in contact with these chemical colours.

‘I never knew the difference between chemical and herbal colours until last year when I suffered terrible itching while playing Holi and I had to be taken to the hospital. Medicines did not help and I had to be pushed an injection. The doctors told me the itching was due to the chemicals present in the colours,’ said Priya, a resident of Bhubaneswar.

‘I was playing Holi with my friends and the moment my face was smeared with colours, it caused a severe burning sensation in my mouth, nose and eyes. I required immediate medical help. This year I am going to play safe only with organic colours,’ said Shristi, a resident of Berhampur.

Last year, hospitals in the state saw a high number of children suffering from chemical-colour related dermatitis.

The only solution to the problem is to make people aware of the goodness of herbal and organic colours and thereby shun the synthetic ones.

The abundance of flowers during Spring made it possible for our ancestors to use the natural extracts of hibiscus roses, berries, turmeric wood, barks and even roots of several plants to make them into coloured powder and play with during the festival.

These were neither expensive nor harmful to the human body or the environment as they had no toxicity.

Perseverance is the key: a young boy’s rise from poverty (Special)

March 7, 2019 By Shibani Behera 3 Comments

Bhubaneswar, March 7 (LocalWire): To reinstate one’s faith in hard work, one must meet 23-year-old Kishan Digal of Gumarh, Phulbani, who defied all odds to build a financially stable life for himself and his family.

His parents separated when he was barely two years old and unable to bear the villagers’ taunts, his mother escaped to the capital.

They took refuge in a slum in Bhubaneswar and she eked out a living by doing odd jobs.

Kishan credits his mother for her grit and determination.

She enrolled him in a government school despite facing monetary problems.

Kishan, too, proved his worth, and worked so laboriously that the school provided him free education under the fee waiver scheme.

The boy pursued a diploma course from a reputed private college after completing his school with a good academic record in 2010.

But as luck would have it, he did not get a good job and ended up working in a grocery store. But still, he never stopped dreaming big.

‘I took a bold step in 2016 and moved to Pune in search of a job and after struggling for two months I found one. There has been no looking back since then,’ Kishan told LocalWire.

Recently, he took his mother on a tour of Maharashtra which made her extremely proud.
