Bhubaneswar, March 14 (LocalWire): In a major setback to the ruling party, Nabrangpur MP Balabhadra Majhi on Thursday quit Biju Janta Dal, amid speculation that BJD may deny tickets to several sitting MLAs and MPs in the upcoming assembly and parliamentary elections.
Majhi told media that he submitted his resignation letter to the chief minister’s political secretary today morning.
According to party sources, there has been growing resentment within BJD, after Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and party supremo recently indicated that he may deny tickets to several sitting lawmakers who were unhappy over his decision to reserve 33% tickets for women in parliament.
This meant 7 out of 21 Lok Sabha seats would be reserved for female candidates.
Leaders like Sambalpur MP Nagendra Pradhan have already got the hint about being dropped and are reported to be negotiating with other parties, party sources said. He is likely to be replaced by BJD’s latest induction and former works secretary Nalini Kant Pradhan.
Even Bhubaneswar MP Prasanna Kumar Patsani seems unsure of his chances with the possibility of former Mumbai police commissioner Arup Patnaik being fielded from the constituency being discussed. The BJP is likely to field former IAS officer Aparajita Sarangi on this seat.
