Kendrapara, Nov 26 (LocalWire): Banks of Chitrotola river at Kendrapara district came alive with boat races on Sunday morning.
Every year, Sasanipada villagers get together and race the boats along the river.
This five km long boat race is the highlight of the three-day long Chitrotola Bali Yatra festival at Sasinipada.
As many as 45 boats participated in the boat race.
“The boat race is undoubtedly the most exciting event of the year. This race was organized jointly by district fishermen’s association and Bali Yatra organizing committee,” said Surendranath Behera, president of Chitotola Bali Yatra committee.
Traditionally dressed rowers were cheered on by an exuberant crowd.
“The event draws a large number of locals and nearby villagers. Boat races have always been a part of the tradition of fishers,” said Dilip Kumar Mohapatra, secretary of Chitotola Bali Yatra committee .
Each country boat was oared by two skilled fishermen.
Ajaya Patra and Karunakar Behera stood first in the race and they got Rs 5000 each as first prize.
