Kendrapara, June 21 (LocalWire): Normal life was paralysed on Friday in Rajnagar of Kendrapara district due to a 12-hour bandh called by the local unit of BJD to protest against decapitation of the statue of Biju Patnaik.
All shops and business establishments remained closed and most of the vehicles were off the roads during the bandh.
Bus services were also affected due to the agitation.
Large numbers of people took out a rally in the main market, shouting slogans against the miscreants who decapitated the statute and demanding stern action against the culprits.
Unidentified miscreants had on Wednesday decapitated the statue at Trinath Bazaar in Rajnagar and the police had registered an FIR against unknown persons based on a complaint by the local BJD president Ashok Padhiari.
Following the bandh, security has been tightened in Rajnagar and other nearby areas to check any untoward incident.
Meanwhile, the Kendrapara BJD president Srikant Panda has announced that the district unit of the party will be installing a new bronze statue of the leader to replace the decapitated statue.
Biju Patnaik had contested from the Patkura Assembly segment in 1967 on a Congress ticket and lost to PSP candidate and school teacher Chakradhar Satpathy.
However, he was soon elected from Rajnagar Assembly segment in a 1971 by-election and went on to become the most popular leader in Odisha.
The senior Patnaik also made a hat-trick by winning from the Kendrapara Lok Sabha seat thrice in 1977, 1980 and 1984.
His charisma and flamboyant personality also worked wonders with the people of the district and he still remains etched in the memory of the electorate here.
