Bolangir, Dec 5 (LocalWire): Setting an example, Khaprakhol Block Development Officer (BDO), Tarani Suna, helped in cremation of a destitute by carrying his body for two km since the villagers refused to perform the old man’s last rites fearing social ostracize.
According to reports, the deceased, identified as Natha Baba (60), a resident of Umet in Maharastra’s Nagpur district, was homeless. He was earning his living by palm reading and begging in Odisha.
He resided at passenger rest shed at Banjipali village in Bolangir district.
Natha Baba breathed his last on Monday night after lying bedridden for a week.
However, the villagers did not come forward to perform his last rites due to social stigma.
After being informed about the incident, the BDO reached the village on Tuesday morning and urged the villagers to help in cremation of the body, but nobody came forward.
So, Suna himself initiated the process of carrying the body to the cremation ground, following which lawyer Rana Pradhan, social activist Praveen Purohit and Chhaturbhuja Kumbhar stepped in for his help.
They contacted a distant relative of the deceased from Sohela in Bargarh district and cremated Natha Baba’s body after his arrival.
