Jajpur, August 1 (LocalWire): A 12-year-old male bear died after accidentally falling into an open well at Haripur village within Sukinda forest range in Jajpur district on Wednesday night.
The bear entered Dolagobinda Bhuyan’s orchard to eat ripe jack fruit but fell into the well.
Hearing its roars, villagers informed the local forest officials and fire brigade men.
Some people also tried to lift the bear by throwing a ladder into the well but the bear damaged it.
Due to delay in arrival of officials, the animal slowly drowned in the well.
The dead animal was fished out from the well today morning, said Ramesh Bhuyan, a villager.
Sobhagya Sahoo, the forest range officer of Sukinda said, ‘Though it is not clear how the bear fell into the well but we suspected it happened because the well had no parapet wall.
It was deep and the animal drowned. We seized the body and sent it to the local veterinary hospital for autopsy.’
