Berhampur, Oct 31 (LocalWire) Berhampur Development Authority (BeDA) has served notice to 46 households for illegal construction over drains and building their houses without water-harvesting structure.
The notices were issued after the city experienced widespread water logging in recent rains.
“In the first phase, they have been served notice for violating the Odisha Development Act (ODA). Efforts are on to identify other defaulters, who will also be issued similar notices in coming days”, BeDA vice-chairman Chakravarti Singh Rathore said.
During verification officials found that 32 households in the city had constructed their houses over the land classified as ‘nullah’, causing hindrance to free flow of rainwater.
Notice will be served to all such constructions in the next few months. If required, the structures will be demolished as per the ODA, he said.
Besides, notices have also been served to 14 households where constructions were done without water harvesting structures.
‘The steps are being taken to avoid water-logging in the city in future” said Rathore.
The house owners will be asked to construct water-harvesting structures in next three months failing which the BeDA will slap a fine Rs three lakh each, he said.
The BeDA has approved about 5000 housing projects in the city after 2000.
However, most of the households have not constructed water-harvesting structures.
The civic authority had also written to the banks not to sanction loans to structures without water harvesting structure, he said adding all the households will be asked to comply with the order within next few months to avoid penalty.
Due to the incessant rains for three days last week, several areas including Gandhi Nagar, Gajapati Nagar, Neeladri Bihar, Haradakhandi and Old Berhampur were water-logged and the residents faced difficulties.
