Berhampur, July 25 (LocalWire): Residents of Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC) can now pay their Holding tax online. The civic body has introduced the online system which is currently on trial and will be made fully live after public feedback, BeMC commissioner, Chakravarti Singh Rathore, said.
People can access the online service menu at the website of the civic body berhampur.gov.in he said. ‘It will make paying taxes easy for the residents. They can clear their dues on time and also reduce the manual work,’ he said.
The Commissioner said BeMC would welcome any suggestions from the public to improve and modify the system. The civic body would then follow up the suggestions accordingly, he added.
Holding tax is one of the major revenues of the civic body, collected from each household in the BeMC limits including individual households, commercial establishments, shops, malls, government and private offices on the basis of plinth areas.
BeMC collects around Rs 6 crore holding tax annually and it will be increased after re-assessment, sources said.
As holding tax goes online, the alleged corruption and nexus between the tax collector and tax payer will end. Tax payers can self assess the new holdings, which are provided online.
Moreover, the data of all holdings will be available in public domain. It will do away any chance of undervaluation of the holdings, the commissioner added. He said they would phase wise scrap the manual collection of tax. ‘It will take about a year to completely scrap manual tax collection and go totally online,’ he added.
In the coming days, BeMC will incorporate more services and collection of other taxes through online payment, he added.
