Berhampur: Feb 24 (LocalWire): After achieving the open defecation free status, the Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC) has launched a fresh drive to create awareness among the city residents for mechanized cleaning of septic tanks.
The three-month campaign will target households, school children and 1,600 women self help groups (SHG) in the city for capacity buliding, BeMC commissioner Chakravarti Singh Rathore said on Saturday.
The programme would urge people to opt for mechanized cleaning of septic tanks at least once in three years through various communication channels, including social media, Rathore said.
A series of hoardings, wall paintings, slideshows and posters will be launched about the dangers of Malasura (Faecal Sludge Demon), he said, adding, “We have already chalked out an awareness plan.”
BeMC became first municipal corporation in the state to achieve the status of open defecation free on October 2, 2018.
The SHGs of the corporation had bagged the first and third prize during the prestigious Swachhata Excellence Award 2018-19 from the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
SHGs Sapatha Area Level Federation and Agrata CLF of BeMC had received a cash award of Rs2 lakh and Rs1.50 lakh respectively for their role in sanitation and livelihood initiatives.
