Berhampur, May 19 (LocalWire): Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC) is organising a month-long summer camp with 2500 participants and 22 co-curricular activities for the second successive year.
Though the month-long summer camp was started from May 2 this year but was suspended for a few days after Fani lashed the coastal areas of the state and registration of participants was extended till 15 May.
The summer camp activities include sports and athletic activities, yoga and dance for women and elderly persons, and dance, music and art for tinytots. It is also offering training on basic computer and yoga.
Majority of the participants are in the age group of 6 to 14 years, said BeMC commissioner Chakravarti Singh Rathore.
‘Now the camp in different places is going on in full swing and will continue till 5 June,’ he said.
‘We have seen most of the parents preferred to enroll their children in sports activities like basketball, skating and martial arts,’ said Ashok Sahu, secretary of Ganjam District Athletic Association, which is also a partner in the camp.
Basketball, aerobics, skating and martial arts are the most-sought after activities than music, art and crafts. While around 500 participants enrolled in basketball followed by dance, including classical and modern (300) skating (260) cricket (132), boxing (120), football (80) chess (76), athletics (70), khokho (50).
Some of the nationally-reputed sportspersons in the country were groomed in summer camps, said Sahu.
‘I preferred to enrol my son in basketball due to his health benefits,’ said A Srinivash Rao.
‘The summer camp is the platform for children to become professional in different fields in the future after getting the basic training,’ said Appa Rao, a football coach.
‘Summer camps not only engage children in activities but also helps nurture their inherent talents in the camp and follow it up as a profession in the future,’ said the BeMC commissioner.
The civic body has provided almost all required materials for the participants. ‘On the closing day, we will hold a competition and provide certificates,’ said the commissioner.
