Berhampur, May 26 (Localwire): The Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC) on Sunday issued warnings against violations of fire safety rules in the city as a precautionary drive, days after an inferno killed 22 students of a coaching centre in Surat.
BeMC has issued notices to the owners and residents of multi-storied buildings to obtain fire-safety certificates from competitive authorities.
“We have set a deadline of three months from the issue of the notice to get the fire-safety measures,” said BeMC commissioner Chakravarti Singh Rathore.
He said action will be taken if anyone found flouting the rules.
“The Surat incident serves us a lesson. Preventive measures will be taken so that similar incidents do not occur in Berhampur,” said Rathore.
Last year, the fire department had found several buildings including hotels, commercial establishments and hospitals in the city violating fire rules and had asked the owners to ensure safety guidelines.
