Berhampur, December 10 (LocalWire): Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with a company based in Andhra Pradesh for handling city’s e-waste, officials said on Tuesday.
Electronic waste or e-waste is the garbage of electrical appliances and electronic devices that are discarded for reuse or recycle.
In the absence of organised processing of the waste, large amounts of pollutants are released into the atmosphere and expose workers to greater health risks.
Berhampur city generates an average of 2,000 kg e-waste every month, BeMC commissioner Chakravarti Singh Rathore said.
At present, there is no mechanism in the city for the processing of such materials.
As a result, waste is posing a major environmental and health hazard.
“We will engage one or two women self-help groups to collect the e-waste from door to door on a commission basis. They will be paid by the company Rs 10 for collection of one-kg waste material.
The company plans to set up its e-waste processing unit here to recycling the waste materials locally, he added.
