Berhampur, June 26 (LocalWire): The Berhampur Municipal Corporation is going to employ the transgender community in collecting parking fees from different public parking stands in the city.
The civic body along with ten members of two self-help groups (SHG) of transgenders will carry out the task from the second week of the next month.
Initially they will be entrusted with the public stands including Old Berhampur, Arnnapurna Market, Sai Market Complex and near Girija Square, where large vehicles are seen to park, said BeMC commissioner Chakravarti Singh Rathore.
They would be provided with the M-POS machine for the purpose.
Before they begin their job, they will be trained on the handling of the M-POS machines.
The four to five-day training will begin in the first week of July, after the four-day shutdown period in the Berhampur city, he said.
“We have asked each of the SHGs to select five members of each group to undergo training of the handling of the M-POS machines,” said the commissioner.
He said the main purpose of the engagement of the transgenders to collect the parking fee was to bring them into the mainstream and also make them self-reliant.
“It will help us lead a dignified life,” said a transgender.
In Berhampur, the population of the transgender community is around 200.
Most of these community members are presently engaged in the traditional practices of dancing at family functions, fairs and festivals and to run the beauty parlors.
But all of their activities have been affected due to the lockdown to contain the spread of the corona-virus, said Sweety Sahu, president of Sakhi, an organization of the transgenders.
