Berhampur, September 14: In a unique way to solve the menace of stray-cattle on city roads, the Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC) has decided that the cattle will be handed over to the cow-less farmers of the nearby villages for their livelihood.
The civic body on Friday handed over five cows to the cow-less farmers of nearby Rangeiluda area after the animals were picked up from the roads in presence of the BeMC staffs and block veterinary officers.
“We have asked the cow owners to tag their animals to identify their ownership.
The drive to tag the cattle was launched on 1 July. Despite massive awareness about cattle tagging during the last two months, some of the cow owners did not tag their animals.
Since we could not establish the ownership of the cows, we lifted them and handed over to cow-less farmers of the nearby areas who have shown interest to take care of the animal,” BeMC commissioner Chakravarti Singh Rathore said.
The cows were tagged before being handed over to the farmers and the record was updated at the civic authority for follow up in future, the commissioner said.
He said the chief district veterinary officer (CDVO) has prepared a list of cow-less farmers who have shown willingness to take care of the animal and the BeMC has the list of around 500 such farmers.
Besides solving the issue of traffic menace, the system will also provide livelihood support to poor farmers and enable the authorities to arrange for a caretaker of these animals, the commissioner said, adding that the drive will be continuing for some more days.
In the last two and half months, BeMC and the animal resources development department have tagged as many as 4,534 cattle in the civic body area limits.
The move is aimed to solve the stray animal menace in the city and to impose heavy penalty to the cattle owners, who desert their animals on the streets.
“In case the owner of the cattle did not respond to take their animal after paying the fine, the animal will be handed over to the poor farmers in the nearby area, like the handing over of the owner-less cows,” BeMC sources said.
