Berhampur, Dec 31 (LocalWire) The Odisha government has commended Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC) for becoming the state’s first Open Defecation Free (ODF) municipality.
There are five municipal corporations in the state, but BeMC is the first corporation to achieve the ODF status on October 2, birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
Housing and Urban Development secretary G.Mathivathanan presented the commendation certificate to the civic body’s commissioner Chakravarti Singh Rathore in a function held at Bhubaneswar recently.
The civic body had constructed 1365 individual household latrines, 314 mini toilets and 504 house toilets under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, along with 66 community toilet complexes with over 500 seats.
“We have created infrastructure for around 7000 families,” said Rathore.
Before being declared ODF, the civic body received 4553 applications for construction of latrines and 2478 of them were approved, he said.
“We are now trying to achieve ODF + and ODF++ status. For this, a campaign will be launched from January,” said the commissioner.
The campaign will focus on the use of toilets by people, he added.
The regular campaign will be carried out in daily basis, along with the new one.
