Berhampur, August 1 (LocalWire): Lok Sabha member from Berhampur and former union minister Chandra Sekhar Sahu has urged the Union Road Transport and Highways minister Nitin Gadkri to expedite the expansion work of the 56-km long Sunakhala to Ichhapuram stretch of the National Highway 16 and include construction of at least four flyovers in the stretch.
The Member of Parliament also pointed out that the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), the implementing agency of the road project, should incorporate these proposals in the detail project report on the expansion of NH-16 from four to six lanes.
The NHAI has proposed only one flyover bridge at Haladiapadara in its earlier DPR, sources said.
In a memorandum submitted to the minister in New Delhi recently, the Berhampur MP stated that the flyover bridges at Humma, Randha, near DRDA office, Chhatrapur and Pokadibandh are needed to ease the traffic on the national highway.
The memorandum sent by Sahu assumes significance since the state administration has identified Narayani junction to Girishola under the stretch as most Vulnerable Accident Prone Zone (VAPZ), consisting of 17 black spots.
“The black spots have been identified during the joint survey conducted by the technical expert team consisting of officials of NHAI, transport department and police personnel,” Ganjam district regional transport officer Saroj Kumar Biswal said.
Sources also pointed out that road accident, particularly fatal accidents, have increased on this stretch and the Ganjam district administration had also written a letter to the NHAI authorities in November last year for building flyover bridges and a truck parking bay on this stretch of the national highway.
During his discussion with the union minister, Sahu also demanded the construction of flyover at Gate Bazar area in Berhampur town on National Highway 59 that passed from Goplapur
Gate Bazar is a major junction with heavy traffic flowing in from four different directions even during the non-peak hour and a flyover bridge to ease the traffic in the area has been a long-standing demand of the locals.
Sahu also demanded an extension of Digha-Gopalpur highway under Sagaramala project to Sonepur, about 20 km ahead of Gopalpur-on-Sea.
“Like Gopalpur, Sonepur is also a beautiful beach resort and thousands of tourists visit to the seaside village to enjoy its climatic condition,” he told the minister.
