Berhampur, March 31 (Local Wire): Several weavers in Ganjam district engaged in producing the much sought after Berhamur Patta sarees are now struggling for survival due to lack of raw materials and restrictions in sales.
During the lock down, the procurement of the raw materials like silk yarn needed for the manufacturing have been barred to enter the state.
Most of the items are raw materials for this weaving work are imported from Karnataka and West Bengal which have been stopped now, said K Bhima Raju, secretary, Berhampur Patta Bunakar Sangh.
Debanga community in the district are often seen engaging in the weaving work which has now been badly hit.
Three weavers cooperative societies in Berhampur, while around 200 weavers families were engaged to weave the silk clothes.
“Though the weavers have no problem to produce the clothes by operating their handlooms inside the house during the period, they however sitting ideal due to the lack of yarn while their sales in lock down have also stopped,” said All Odisha Devang Mahasangh president T Gopi.
The weavers now demand special revival package during the lock down from the government.
