Berhampur, August 20 (LocalWire): The Silk City has once again emerged as the cleanest city in the state, as Berhampur ranked top among the towns of the state and ranked 63rd in the country in Swachh Survekshan-2020.
Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC) has bagged the national award in the category of the Best Medium City in Innovation and Best Practices (3-10 lakh population).
Swachh Survekshan Awards-2020 was announced by the Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs, Hardeep Singh Puri, in New Delhi through a virtual meeting on Thursday.
The announcement of this year’s results was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs said. The survey was done in 4,242 cities and saw the participation of 1.87 crore citizens, sources said.
“We ranked 63rd in national level and first in the state this time,” said BeMC commissioner Chakravarti Singh Rathore after attending the virtual meeting.
Last year, Berhampur had ranked 216 in the national ranking and also stood first in the state.
The BeMC could achieve the rank and award due to its community lead sanitation movement, said BeMC commissioner.
“We will try to elevate our rank in the national ranking next year and bag more awards with the support of the residents of the city,” he added.
He said that around 1600 women self-help groups with 16,000 members under three city-level federations are spearheading the Swachh Bharat Movement in the city.
“This initiative has not only brought the community forward but its integration with National Urban Livelihood Mission (NULM), skill development and livelihood was also ensured,” he said.
