Berhampur, August 28 (LocalWire): The Silk City will soon have Ganjam Hatt near Corporation Road, in the heart of Berhampur.
The design of the proposed Haat was approved in a special meeting of the Berhampur Development Authority (BeDA) held on Tuesday.
“Besides the commercial complexes, the proposed Haat will also have a walking-track for all sections of people, including women, senior citizens, and children.
The project will cost around Rs 30-crore,” BeDA vice-chairman Chakravarti Singh Rathore said.
“We will float a tender for the project after the government approves it,” he said, adding that there will be no problem of fund for the project as BeDA has decided to collect this from the leaseholders of the shops in the commercial complex in advance.
In the commercial complex, the BeDA has decided to set up 66 shops.
He further informed that the BeDA has around five acres of land in the Corporation Road.
Out of this, they have proposed to establish the Ganjam Hatt in around 70,000-sq feet area.
In the commercial complex, the civic body would encourage outlets to sell different products of Ganjam that are famous in the country, including the handicraft and handloom, eateries and others.
Berhampur Patta, the famous handloom silk saree that has also got the Geographical Indication (GI), handicraft products like bell-metal fish of Belaguntha, clay doll of Mathura and wood carving of Balipadara are some of the famous items of Ganjam district.
“Besides these, the traders will also be allowed to open the shops to sell some other products,” Rathore said.
It may be recalled that the BeDA had decided to set up Gajapati Plaza, a commercial complex at the site a few years ago, and it had also signed an agreement with a Kolkata based company.
The agreement was, however, canceled after some years and BeDA decided to establish Ganjam Haat, to showcase the products of the district.
According to reports, the land has been lying ideal after the civic body removed the encroachments.
