Berhampur, March 12 (LocalWire): The famous biannual festival Thakurani Yatra, organised in honor of the city’s presiding deity Goddess Budhi Thakurani, has kicked off here with fanfare.
The installation of “Subha Khamb” at Desbehera Street on Monday marked the beginning of the Yatra, although the main carnival will start from March 29, organizers said.
According to beliefs, the festival continues till the time the deity remains at her father’s house. This year, it’s from March 29 to April 29.
“The festival start date was fixed in a meeting of pundits. We will convey our decision to the district administration soon and start preparation for the event,” said P. Durga Prasad Desbehera, the heir authorized to conduct the festival.
The carnival, also known as festival of Devangiris (weaving community), will be organised by Desbehera, who is the head of the community.
As per tradition, Desbehera, his wife along with others will go to the Budhi Thakurani temple in a procession to invite the goddess at an auspicious time to be fixed by pundits.
The deity would then be installed at a makeshift house near Desbehera’s home during the duration of the festival.
The city is decorated with dazzling lights and flowers for thousands of visitors who come to participate in the carnival.
