Bhubaneswar, December 13 (LocalWire):The illegal occupiers of land at the internationally acclaimed Bhitarkanika and Chilika wetland sites will now face penal action with registration of non-bailable criminal cases against the encroachers.
Stringent legal action will be enforced upon the land grabbers to ensure the safety of the fragile ecosystem of these wetland spots.
Authorities of Chennai-based Central Aquaculture Authority (CZA) have also been requested to depute an expert on permanent basis to oversee the suggest ameliorative measures for safeguarding the ecology of these places, said senior officials of the State Forest Department.
On Orissa High Court’s directions, the revenue, forest and police department in a joint operation has successfully demolished the earthen prawn dykes that have unlawfully sprouted up along the wetland areas.
After the areas are cleared, mangroves are going to be regenerated on a war footing on those denuded patches, they said.
Around 100 square kilo metre areas in Bhitarkanika and Chilika wetland spots are still under unauthorized prawn cultivation. Demolition drive is currently underway to free these areas from encroachment, the officials added.
