Berhampur, September 1 (LocalWire): The proposed Ganjam Haat and Commercial Complex of the Berhampur Development Authority (BeDA) is likely to become a reality soon, as the civic body on Monday performed the “Bhumi Puja” for the project on the occasion of the Local Self Governance (LSG) day.
MP (Berhampur) Chandra Sekhar Sahu performed Bhumi Puja, in the presence of Bikram Kumar Panda and Pradip Panigrahy, MLAs of Berhampur and Gopalpur.
The proposed haat will be established at the corporation road here in an area of around 70,000 sq. ft with an investment of around Rs 22.44 crore.
The tenders for the allotment of the shops in the commercial complex in the haat have also been finalized. The project is aimed to be completed by December 2021.
Besides the three-storied commercial complex, the proposed haat will also have facilities of walking-tracks for all sections of people, including women, senior citizens and children.
In the commercial complex, the BeDA has decided to set up 105 shops, said vice-chairman of BeDA Chakravarti Singh Rathore.
He said the BeDA has around five-acres of land in the Corporation Road without utilization.
Out of this, they have proposed to establish the Ganjam Haat in around 70,000-sq feet area. Presently the land was lying ideal, after the civic body evicted the encroachers.
In the commercial complex, the civic body has decided to encourage setting up of outlets to sell different products of Ganjam, which are famous in the country.
These include handicrafts and handloom, including Berhampur Patta, eateries and others.
Berhampur Patta, the handloom silk saree is famous in the country and has gotten the Geographical Indication (GI) tag.
Similarly, the handicraft products like bell-metal fish of Belaguntha, clay doll of Mathura and wood carving of Balipadara are some of the famous and indigenous items of Ganjam district are likely to have outlets in the proposed haat.
Besides these, the traders also allowed the shops to sell some other popular products like papada, pickles etc. said vice chairman of BeDA.
In the project, the civic body has also wanted to establish the amphitheatre in around 48,962 sq. ft having a seating capacity of around 2000, sources said.
