Bhubaneswar, May 30 (LocalWire): Binny, the lone orangutan, which mesmerized visitors at the Nandankanan Zoological Park, died last night at the age of 41.
She was the only orangutan kept in an Indian zoo. Orangutans are native to Indonesia and Malaysia.
Zoo officials said Binny died of old age. Her condition deteriorated in the last couple of days due to cold and fever. However, an autopsy will be done today to ascertain the exact cause of death.
Binny was undergoing treatment for an infected wound in her throat. Veterinarians from England and Singapore specialized on apes had been treating her. She slept in her enclosure most of the time.
Binny was brought to Nandankanan from Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park in Pune on November 20, 2003, when she was 25 years old.
Since then she had been staying at Nandankanan zoo. An attempt to find a partner for her didn’t yield any positive result.
