Cuttack, March 31 (LocalWire): State government ordered the culling of over 435 ducks and chicken on Sunday morning at a hatchery here after bird flu tested positive. The food safety department has banned the sale of poultry and its products in the city.
Fowls within one kilometre radius of the farm were also culled and people have been advised against consuming chicken for next three months. Apart from this, over 6180 eggs were destroyed at the centre in Khapuria too.
The manager of the duck firm, Dr Narayan Mohapatra, found the death of nearly 10 to 15 duck each day unusual and started investigating.
Unusual mortality was also reported among other hatcheries in Cuttack and a team led by chief district veterinary officer took stock of the situation in nearby areas.
The fisheries and animal resources development department (FARD) sent samples to the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases at Bhopal which tested positive.
