Bhubaneswar, Jan 28 (localWire) The Aviary at the Nandankanan zoo will remain closed for visitors from Tuesday till further notice, the Zoo authorities said after H5N1 virus confirmed in the state.
At present, it is home to 77 species of birds.
The move came after the state government confirmed the origin of the H5N1 virus inside the Poultry Breeding and Research Farm, College of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry, Odisha University of Agriculture Technology, Bhubaneswar.
The state has started the process of culling operations within the radius of 1 km of the OUAT. The culling operation move came after the H5N1 avian influenza virus was confirmed in the bird samples sent from OUAT to Bhopal for testing, senior official Sushen Panda said.
The area within the radius of one kilometre has been marked as the infected zone whereas the area within 10 kms of the infected area will be kept under close surveillance.
12 rapid response teams have been formed and seven teams are deployed to carry out culling operations.
