Kendrapara, April 26 (LocalWire): The three major political parties are giving their opponents a run for their money in Rajnagar Assembly segment under Kendrapara Lok Sabha seat.
The sitting MLA and Congress candidate Ansuman Mohanty is pitched against former Rajnagar MLA and BJP candidate Alekha Jena and BJD candidate Dhruba Charana Sahoo.
The Assembly poll will be the testing ground for the popularity of BJD and its supremo Naveen Patnaik while Mohanty is still basking in the glory of his late father Nalinikanta Mohanty, a popular leader who did several developmental works in river-locked Rajnagar.
Nalinikanta, a protégé of Biju Patnaik, was the undisputed winner from Rajnagar since 1977. He won six times as a Janata Party, Janata Dal and BJD candidate.
In 2004, Nalinikanta was elected with a Congress ticket after he was suspended from the BJD and a vigilance case filed against him while he was a minister under Naveen Patnaik.
Ansuman Mohanty was elected in 2014 defeating BJD candidate Sahoo.
‘BJD neglected Rajnagar. People are not getting drinking water. Most schools have no teachers. Health scenario has reached its nadir due to non- appointment of doctors in the hospitals,’ said Mohanty.
‘Nalinikanta was a minister from 1990 to 1995 and 2000 to 2002 but he failed to do any developmental work in his constituency and his son’s allegation against the BJD is like a pot calling kettle black,’ said Sahoo.
The world famous Bhitarkanika national park and the world’s largest rookery of sea turtles at Gahiramatha beach are situated within Rajnagar. But the state government has done nothing to promote eco-tourism in these areas, said Rabindra Das a villager of Dangamala.
‘The much hyped drinking water supply project in Pattamundai NAC and Rajnagar areas is yet to be completed and we have highlighted the local issues this election. This year it is a fight between a corrupt Congress leader and a clean BJD candidate,’ said Sahoo.
