Berhampur, Feb 12 (LocalWire): A woman leader of the ruling BJD in Ganjam district has sustained 50% burn injuries while she was trying to self-immolate in the premises of the SP Office in Berhampur on Wednesday.
Presently in a critical condition, Meenakhi Mishra (41), who is an executive body member of the ruling party’s women wing, was referred to the SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack. Mishra tried to self-immolate herself to make a point that her son Raja Mishra was arrested in a false case on January 28.
At about 1.00 pm, Mishra came to the SP Office to meet the SP Pinak Mishra.
She, however, could not meet him as he was absent from his office. She met the Additional SP and shared her concerns who assured her to look into the matter.
After coming out of the office, she poured the kerosene on her body and set herself ablaze.
“Our staff rescued her and took her to the MKCG Medical College and Hospital. Since her condition was critical, she was referred to the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack,” said the SP.
Several BJD leaders, including the former MLA R.Ch. Chyaupatnaik, former Chairperson of the Berhampur Development Authority (BeDA) Subash Moharana, and others visited her in the hospital.
The SP told LocalWire that at least five persons, including a teenager have been arrested for allegedly attacking Mishra and her son with sharp weapons at the Panda colony on January 28. In a counter case, Raja was arrested by the police for allegedly attacking them.
Meenakhi, however, alleges that her son was implicated in a false case and demanded for his release.
